Tired of scholarship lists with dead links from 2021? These will definitely interest you.

I checked government sites and official university pages for 2026. These 5 scholarships are 100% funded, open to international students, and not recycled blog spam. Tuition + monthly money + flights + insurance covered. No agent needed.

Scholarships 2026: Fully Funded Masters and PhD You Can Still Apply For in Germany, UK, USA, Japan, Europe

If you have a degree and decent grades, pick 2 and start now. Applications open between August 2025 and January 2026 for 2026 intake.

1. DAAD EPOS Scholarship – Germany: Masters and PhD for Development Workers

DAAD is Germany’s main scholarship body. EPOS = Postgraduate Courses with Relevance to Developing Countries.

What It Covers:

  • Monthly stipend: €992 for masters, €1,300 for PhD
  • Full tuition at public universities
  • Travel allowance: €1,000-€1,600 depending on country
  • Health, accident, personal liability insurance
  • 2-6 month German language course before degree starts

Who Can Apply:

You need bachelor degree + at least 2 years professional experience after degree. Must be from developing country list. Some African countries like Nigeria qualifies.

Age limit: Usually under 42 for PhD.

You must return home 2 years after degree. DAAD wants you to use skills at home.

Fields Covered:

Development economics, public policy, engineering, environmental science, agriculture, health, infrastructure. 40+ masters courses taught in English.

Universities:

  • University of Göttingen,
  • TU Dresden,
  • University of Stuttgart,
  • University of Bonn,
  • HTW Berlin.

Course list changes yearly.

Timeline For 2026:

Applications open August 2026 to October 2026 depending on course. Each course has own deadline. Most are September-October 2025 for September 2026 start.

How to Apply:

1. Check course list: https://www2.daad.de/deutschland/stipendium/datenbank/en/21148-scholarship-database/

2. Apply direct to university first, not DAAD

3. Send documents to university + DAAD

Documents Needed:

  • CV in Europass format,
  • Motivation letter 2 pages,
  • Degree certificates,
  • Work certificates for 2 years,
  • IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80.

Resource link:

https://www2.daad.de/en/information-services-for-individuals/information-for-students/courses-in-germany/epos/

Why Its Good:

Germany has no tuition fees anyway, but DAAD gives you money to live. €992/month is enough in most German cities. After degree you get 18-month job search visa.

Catch:

2 years work experience is strict. Fresh graduates can’t apply. Work must be relevant to course.

2. Chevening Scholarship – UK: 1-Year Masters for Future Leaders

Chevening is UK government scholarship run by Foreign Office. Goal: train future leaders.

What It Covers:

  • Full tuition at any UK university you choose
  • Monthly stipend: ~£1,236 in London, ~£1,097 outside London
  • Return flight to UK
  • Visa fee + health surcharge paid
  • Arrival allowance £500, departure allowance £600

Who Can Apply:

  • Citizen of Chevening country. Some African countries like Nigeria qualifies.

Bachelor degree + 2 years work experience. 2800 hours total = part-time counts.

Must return home 2 years after study.

No age limit.

Fields Covered:

Any subject at any UK university. But they prefer courses related to leadership, policy, governance, development.

Universities:

You can pick 3 universities.

  • Oxford,
  • Cambridge,
  • LSE,
  • Manchester,
  • Edinburgh.

All accept Chevening.

Timeline For 2026:

Application opens August 6, 2025 and closes November 5, 2025 for 2026-2027 intake.

Interviews January-March 2026. Results June 2026.

How to Apply:

1. Only through official site: https://www.chevening.org/apply

2. Write 4 essays: leadership, networking, study in UK, career plan. Each 500 words. This decides 70% of result.

3. Get 2 reference letters.

Documents Needed:

  • Degree certificate,
  • IELTS 6.5,
  • 2 references,
  • Passport.

Resource link:

https://www.chevening.org/scholarship/

Why Its Good:

One year masters = fast degree. UK degree is 1 year vs 2 years elsewhere. Chevening network is strong for jobs later.

Catch:

Competition is brutal. 55,000+ apply, 1,500 win globally. Your essays must be specific, not copy-paste. “I want to help my country” is not enough. Say exactly what project you’ll run.

2026 Update:

Salary threshold for UK work visa went up, but Chevening still covers it. UK wants Chevening alumni to return home.

3. Fulbright Foreign Student Program – USA: Masters, PhD, Research

Fulbright is US government flagship scholarship. 4,000 students funded yearly from 160+ countries.

What It Covers:

  • Full tuition at US university
  • Monthly living stipend: $1,500-$2,500 depending on city
  • Round-trip airfare
  • Health insurance
  • Visa sponsorship J-1

Who Can Apply:

  • Citizen of participating country. Some African countries like Nigeria qualifies through US Embassy, Abuja.

Bachelor degree. No work experience needed for masters.

Good academic record.

Must return home 2 years after program.

Fields Covered:

Almost all fields except clinical medicine, dentistry, nursing. STEM, social sciences, arts all accepted.

Universities:

You do not choose university first. Fulbright Commission places you after selection. They match you to 3-5 universities based on your field.

Timeline For 2026:

Deadline varies by country. For Nigeria: typically May 2026 for 2027 start. Check US Embassy Abuja site.

Application opens February 2026.

How To Apply:

1. Find your country page: https://us.fulbrightonline.org/countries

2. Apply through local US Embassy, not US directly

3. 3 essays: study objective, personal statement, research plan

Documents Needed:

  • Degree,
  • Transcripts,
  • IELTS/TOEFL,
  • 3 references,
  • CV.

Resource link:

https://foreign.fulbrightonline.org/about/foreign-student-program

Why Its Good:

Only scholarship that places you in university after selection. You get US degree + cultural exchange. J-1 visa allows spouse + kids.

Catch:

J-1 visa has 2-year home rule. You must return home 2 years before working in USA. Also application is long, 6-9 months process.

2026 Update:

Fulbright-Nehru for India closed May 2025, next Feb 2026 for 2027-28. Nigeria cycle is separate.

4. MEXT Scholarship – Japan: Undergrad, Masters, PhD Fully Funded

MEXT = Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Japan’s main scholarship.

What It Covers:

  • Full tuition at Japanese university
  • Monthly stipend: ¥144,000/month masters ∼$950, ¥145,000 PhD ∼$960
  • Round-trip airfare Tokyo
  • Entrance exam fee waived

No age limit for research students, 35 for masters/PhD

Who Can Apply:

  • Citizen of country with diplomatic relations with Japan. Nigeria qualifies.

Bachelor degree for masters, masters for PhD.

Born on/after April 2, 1991 for masters 2026.

No work experience needed.

Fields Covered:

Any field. Engineering, medicine, humanities, agriculture. You can even study Japanese culture.

Universities:

  • Any national,
  • Public,
  • Private university in Japan.

Top Ones:

  • University of Tokyo,
  • Kyoto,
  • Osaka,
  • Tohoku.

Timeline For 2026:

2 application routes:

Embassy recommendation: Opens April 2026, deadline May 2026. Exam in June, interview July.

University recommendation: Contact professor directly October-December 2025.

How to Apply:

1. Embassy route: Apply at Japanese Embassy Abuja. Written exam in Math/English.

2. University route: Email professors with research proposal first.

Documents Needed:

  • Degree,
  • Transcripts,
  • Research proposal 2 pages,
  • Medical form,
  • Passport photos.

Resource link:

https://www.mext.go.jp/en/policy/education/highered/title02/detail02/sdetail02/1374098.htm

Why Its Good:

No work experience needed. Monthly money is high for Asia. Japan has low crime, good research labs.

Catch:

Embassy exam is hard. Math + English + Japanese. University route needs professor to accept you first. Language: Many courses in English now, but learning Japanese helps daily life.

2026 Update:

Stipend increased slightly. More English-taught programs added.

5. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters – Europe: Study in 3 Countries, 1 Degree

This is most underrated scholarship. You get masters taught in 2-3 European countries. Degree from consortium of universities.

What It Covers:

  • Monthly stipend: €1,400 for 24 months = €33,600 total
  • Full tuition fees
  • Travel costs: €1,000-€3,000 depending on distance
  • Visa costs + insurance

Who Can Apply:

Bachelor degree or final year student.

No work experience needed.

English proficiency IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90. If degree taught in English, exemption letter works.

Fields Covered:

150+ joint masters. Renewable energy, data science, public health, cultural studies, robotics, sustainable development.

Universities:

Example: Erasmus Mundus Master in Sustainable Transport. Study in Belgium + France + Spain. Degree from 3 universities.

Timeline For 2026:

Applications open October 2025 to January 2026 for September 2026 start.

Each program has own deadline on Erasmus catalogue.

How To Apply:

1. Search programs: https://www.eacea.ec.europa.eu/scholarships/erasmus-mundus-catalogue_en

2. Apply direct to program, max 3 programs per year

3. 1 application = considered for scholarship automatically

Documents Needed:

  • Degree,
  • Transcripts, CV,
  • Motivation Letter,
  • 2 references,
  • IELTS.

Resource link:

https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/opportunities/opportunities-for-individuals/students/erasmus-mundus-joint-masters

Why Its Good:

Live in 3 countries, 3 cultures, 3 degrees on 1 certificate. €1,400/month is highest stipend among these 5. Travel budget included.

Catch:

Very competitive. 25-30 students per program globally. Must move country every semester. Packing is stressful.

2026 Update:

Most programs closed for Sep 2026, next cycle Oct-Jan 2026 for Sep 2027. Check catalogue now and shortlist programs.

How To Actually Win Any Of These 5

Rule 1: Start 6 months before deadline

DAAD, Chevening, Fulbright need 3-4 months just for essays + references. Do not start in September for October deadline.

Rule 2: Tailor everything

Chevening essay about UK + your country. DAAD letter about development + your job. MEXT proposal about research + professor. Copy-paste kills 90% of applications.

Rule 3: Language test early

IELTS dates fill fast. Book now for September. 6.5 for Chevening, 6.0 for DAAD, 6.5-7 for Erasmus.

Rule 4: Apply to 3 scholarships, not 1

Most winners apply DAAD + Chevening + Erasmus together. Rejection from one means nothing. Different committees, different criteria.

Rule 5: References matter

Ask professors/boss 2 months before. Give them your CV + draft points. Don’t ask them “write anything”. Weak reference = weak application.

Money You Need Before Scholarship

Even “fully funded” needs upfront cash:

  • IELTS: $250
  • WES degree evaluation for Canada/USA: $240
  • Passport: $50
  • Courier: $40

Total: $600-$700. Save this first.

Scholarship pays you back after you arrive.

Common Rejection Reasons

1. Generic motivation letter: “I love Germany” not enough. Say which course + which professor + what project.

2. Weak work experience proof: DAAD needs letter from HR with duties, not just certificate.

3. Low IELTS: 5.5 won’t cut it for Chevening/Erasmus.

4. Late application: Portal closes 12pm UK time. Not midnight.

Timeline For 2026 Intake If You Start Today

  • Month 1-2 June-July 2026: IELTS, get transcripts, ask references
  • Month 3 August 2026: Chevening opens, draft essays
  • Month 4 September 2026: DAAD courses open, Erasmus opens
  • Month 5 October-November 2026: Submit all applications
  • Month 6-9 December 2026-March 2027: Interviews
  • Month 10 June-July 2027: Results
  • Month 12 September 2027: Fly

Yes, 1 year process. Start now.

Final Word

None of these are secret. Information is public. What separates winners from losers: start early + read actual eligibility page + write specific application.

  1. DAAD if you have 2 years work experience.
  2. Chevening if you want leadership + UK.
  3. Fulbright if you want USA research.
  4. MEXT if you want Asia + no work exp needed.
  5. Erasmus if you want to live in 3 countries.

Pick 2 that match you. Open documents folder today. Name it “Scholarship 2026”. Put CV, degree, IELTS inside. That is step 1.
